Year 5 had an incredible day out at Lichfield Fire Station today, taking part in the ‘Safe and Sound’ event. It was a day filled with life-saving lessons, practical tips, and some truly eye-opening statistics. Here’s a breakdown of what we learned from the experts: Staying Safe by the Water The RNLI joined us to discuss beach and open water safety. We learned how to spot potential dangers near the water and, most importantly, what to do if we (or someone else) ever get into trouble. The Danger Zone: HGV Safety One of the most shocking moments of the day came from the team at DHL. We talked about HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) blind spots. Did you know? The blind spot behind a large lorry is so big that our entire school could fit inside it without the driver seeing us! Plus it takes a HGV lorry travelling at 30mph the length of a whole football pitch to come to a stop in an emergency!! It was a huge reminder to always give lorries plenty of space on the road and always wait until they have come to a stop, even at a pedestrian crossing. Fire Safety at Home Staffordshire Fire and Rescue taught us the essentials of fire and electrical safety. We discussed: * How to prevent fires in the kitchen and with electrical items. * The life-saving importance of having a planned fire escape route at home. Do you charge your iPad or iPhone on your bed or on the sofa? STOP IT!!! This is a huge fire risk! Being a Great Citizen The Staffordshire Police team led a session on what it means to be a "good citizen." We explored how our choices impact the community and how we can help look after one another. Cyber Safety & Banking Finally, HSBC helped us navigate the world of digital security. In an age of online gaming and apps, we learned the golden rules of password security and how to keep our personal information safe from hackers. Oh and we also saw Greg James doing his comic relief longest ride when he stopped at the fire station for a snack and to do a breakfast TV interview!! A huge thank you to all the volunteers and emergency services who made the day so memorable. Year 5 are officially "Safe and Sound"!
